Sydney Design 2013

There were some highlights to the recent Sydney Design 2013 at the Sydney  Powerhouse Museum and to the museum itself. It has lost some of its’ charisma despite the fact that it houses some 385,000 objects  of which a bare few are on display at any given time.

The 3 x 3 x 3 Challenge had three teams of designers address pressing social problems with socially-repsonsbile design solutions.

What was a lot more fun, relevant and relatable was, “Edible Walls” where a series of installations in the museum cafe. Drawing on the work of Patrick Blanc and his vertical gardens, it shows how that idea has become quite commercialised in some cases. IMG_2588 IMG_2589 IMG_2591 IMG_2593 IMG_2594 IMG_2595 IMG_2598 IMG_2599 IMG_2600 The installation by the Institute for Sustainable Futures and UTS however, was a clear favourite – this is the last of the ones shown here. It’s takes more space than the others but there is a clear understanding of what it does, how it works and has an honest scale to it.
