A new space for Sydney’s CBD

November 18, 2013 § Leave a comment

Last week a friend took me through the sleek and flowingly sculptural foyer of the new, 42 level, ANZ building at 161 Castleraegh Street, Sydney, to have lunch in Liberty Place. The foyer, that is really a public space rather than a commercial/private one, is marking its’ territory.  Moving outside is the white neon artwork, Light Event,  by London-based Welsh artist, Cerith Wyn Evans, that works as a transition between the overhang of the new tower designed by FJMT and the public domain.

These are new spaces – Liberty and Castleraegh Places depending on which website you read-  that were created through the complex urban design process of developing the tower and consolidating the properties. They have a New York scale and intimacy – not too big and not too small and not filled in with stuff for the sake of not being comfortable with space. The restaurants and were full which says it all.
